On Saturday, September 10, 2016 the Russell Theatre will bring, once again, a brand new kind of movie going experience to Maysville. The theatre will show the cult classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Last year the Maysville Younger Womens Club sponsored the production as their community project. Many theaters across the United States host midnight showings and the dedicated fans show up in costume. The Russell Theatre is also excited to announce they will be hosting a shadow cast, the Dawn Marie’s Misfit Toys, who will accompany the movie and encourage audience participation.
The Russell Theatre reached out to the Midnight Misfits in 2014 to see if they would be interested in, and able to perform during a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. After touring the theater, they said, “we can’t possibly say no to performing at this beautiful venue! We believe that preserving the history of this theater and the building itself is extremely important to the town of Maysville. Future generations should be able to experience what it was like before the multi-plex theaters took over. We are happy to help the theater raise funds any way that we are able and we sincerely hope that they achieve their goal and are able to complete the renovations.”
This year, Dawn Marie’s Misfit Toys, will be the shadow cast. These actors are comprised of very talented folks from Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Illinois and a handful of die-hard actors from Delaware. They have members who have been doing this anywhere from 1 year to the veterans of the group who have been active for over 20 years. This talented cast includes individuals have a long list of performances and achievements under their belts. All have performed with their local Rocky Horror casts in their home states and/or have guest performed with other casts. Many have also gone on to perform at the national Rocky Horror convention, sci-fi/comic/horror conventions, and even The House of Blues. Everyone in this group has their own reasons for engaging in this hobby. Some do it for the love of the movie and the music, some like the performance aspect, and a lot do it for the feeling of belonging and the friendships that they form from being a part of this community. The Misfit Toys are donating their time and talent to the theatre to help sustain this important atmospheric theatre in Kentucky.
The movie is rated R and not appropriate for young audiences. There will be prop bags sold at the theatre so that audience members can participate in the show. The doors will open at 6:30pm and the preshow will begin at 7pm. The preshow for the second movie will be at 9:30pm. There will be a suggested donation of $10 per person per show.
Tickets may be purchased ahead of time on the Russell Theatre’s Facebook site or on Eventbrite/The Russell Theatre.
